DIY Beauty: Products for Your Skin You Can Make Today

Beauty product sales are a huge industry. People spend thousands of dollars every year on products that will help tame their hair, clear their skin, and keep their appearance youthful. While it can be hard on your budget, there are some effective products that can be made in your own home at a fraction of the cost.

DIY beauty products are great because they work well, are less expensive, and you know all of the ingredients. Many of the commercial beauty products contain harsh chemicals, perfumes, and other additives that may not be good for you. You can also make sure that there are no products that you are sensitive to, which is a freedom that does not come with commercial products.

To make your own creams, masks, and other types of products, you will need very little specialty products. Most of the ingredients needed are things that you will have on hand. The items you may need to purchase, such as coconut oil, will quickly become a staple in your house, as you begin to increase your personally made beauty regime. Let’s take a look at a few of the most effective home beauty products that you can make in your own home.

Makeup Remover

Makeup remover is such an important part of your beauty regime. Makeup that is left on overnight is going to damage your skin, and it will also leave a mess that you will have to deal with in the morning. Your makeup can also transfer to your pillow case overnight, leaving an unsightly mess.

To make a DIY makeup remover you will need olive oil, aloe vera water (although filtered water is fine, aloe vera water does contain some great nutrients, but it does not really impact the effectiveness of the makeup remover), a spray bottle, and some cotton pads. The natural oil on your skin is very close to olive oil, so it makes it a great choice to remove stubborn makeup, without the worry of breakouts.

Simply mix half a cup of olive oil in a spray bottle, and add in two cups of aloe vera water or filtered water. Put the lid back on the bottle, and mix well. Spray a little bit of the mix onto a cotton pad, and there you have it, a healthy and inexpensive makeup remover.

Hair Mask

This hair mask takes just three ingredients, and can be made in small or large batches. It is so easy, and works so well, you may be tempted to make a big batch and share with your friends. This is a present that is sure to be appreciated.

The ingredients that you need for this hair mask are coconut oil, honey, and apple cider vinegar. Each of these ingredients provide great benefits to your hair, and together make a powerful hair mask. Put two parts of the coconut oil, two parts honey, and one part apple cider vinegar in a microwavable container. Place in the microwave until melted.

Be careful to avoid burns, and make sure the mixture is not too hot before applying. To apply, just pour onto your hair, root to tip, and leave on for around 30 minutes. Wash out, and enjoy your healthy hair. You will need to reheat the mixture for every application as it will separate when it cools.

Facial Mask

There are many different types of face masks that can be made at home. This one uses orange juice and oatmeal to sooth dry and flaky skin, which many people deal with during the winter months. All you need is steel-cut oats, orange juice, plain yogurt, and honey.

You will want to mix one half of a cup of steel-cut oats with the juice from one orange. Add in a quarter of a cup of plain yogurt and two tablespoons of honey. The oats act as an exfoliant, and remove the dry and dead skin. The yogurt, orange, and honey are all great at providing nutrients and moisture that will help your skin stay healthy all winter long.

Lip Scrub

Many people suffer from dry and chapped lips, especially over the winter months. If this is something you struggle with, an easy to whip-up homemade lip scrub is up your alley. It only takes four ingredients that your probably already have in your pantry to make, and takes less than a minute to put it all together.

To make the lip scrub, just put equal parts honey, brown sugar and white sugar in a bowl. Add in a little bit of olive oil, until you reach to consistency that you like; typically about half the amount of honey used works well, but you can make it as thick or thin as you like.

You likely noticed that many of these products contain little to no aromatics, and that means you can make them smell any way you like. While some of these products contain natural aromas, like orange, the scent is entirely up to you.

You can add ingredients, such as lemon zest or natural essential oils to make these products your own. You will want to be careful with some essential oils; read the labels carefully to stay safe, as some oils do have properties like photo-toxicity, where the oil reacts dangerously in the sun. These are all clearly labeled on the oils, just be aware of it.

You will also want to stick to smaller batches when you are trying out your new customization. Some of the best ideas turn into terrible smelling monstrosities. It would be a shame to have a large amount of that to dispose of.

Stay Beautiful

There are a wide variety of homemade beauty products that are very effective, this is just a small sample of what you can create in your kitchen. You can find many more ideas out there, and as you begin to see how the ingredients work together, you may even find yourself coming up with your own homemade goodies.
