How Different Eating Habits Affect your Body

Everybody has their own personal eating habits. These range from types of food to times of day. Some people regularly skip breakfast, while others add every food group to their morning routine. There are grazers, nighttime snack junkies, and vegetarians. Some people just eat when they feel like it, while others go to great lengths to avoid extra calories. Your body responds differently to each type of eating style. Sometimes it is difficult to lose weight, and sometimes it is difficult to gain. Every body type is different. Whatever your goals are, it is important to be aware of how your eating habits affect your body.

Junk Food


Modern food choices make it difficult to maintain a healthy diet. Fast food restaurants are an easy alternative after a long day at work. Packaged foods are also incredibly convenient when it comes to packing lunches and snacks. Processed foods, however, can cause a myriad of health issues. Many people make chips, candy, and fast food a daily part of their routine. Stop by any college dorm, and you are bound to see trash cans overflowing with chip bags and coke cans. Many people feel they are doing fine with these habits, until they begin to wean off of them. It is soon realized how bad these foods can make you feel. The effects of junk food can be seen within only a few short days.

Studies show that it only takes about nine days for junk food habits to affect your brain. Focus and concentration can become limited. Energy levels remain low, and an irritable mood may take over. A ton of sugar at once results in alarming amount of insulin in the bloodstream. Your tissues take all of this in at once, causing a quick change in blood sugar levels. It can be hard to control your emotions at this point. You may also experience regular bloating, skin inflammation, and puffy eyes. They also contribute to an addictive brain chemistry, narrowed arteries, and metabolic disturbances.


There has been some speculation that this is the healthiest way to eat. We tend to get ourselves into the three meal a day schedule. This is because it fits into our work and school day. Culture dictates proper meal and snack times. Grazing is a much more natural way to eat. You can become hungry between large meals, leading to excessive snacking. Some weight loss programs require three regular meals with no snacking. This can be difficult to maintain. Grazing is much better for keeping your appetite in check. Grazing can also be described as eating mini-meals. This method of eating allows for about six smaller meals per day. This method can keep you from feeling hungry, but also requires that your digestive system be working constantly during the day. Some gastrointestinal discomfort may be present.

Calorie Deficit

When a diet is implemented, calorie counting is often a part of it. This can be fairly difficult, considering that many meals have a lot of items to count. The main foods are not the only thing that must be counted. Condiments, dressings, and beverages must also be included. When you are trying to lose weight, a calorie deficit is necessary. This means that you are burning more calories than you are eating. Once you reach a weight you desire, you can even this out again.

People on this type of diet tend to feel hungry a large portion of the time. Your body needs food to make energy. At some point, you are putting out energy without replenishing your food supply. The idea is for your body to then turn to the fat you have stored for energy. This is the most effective way to lose weight. To maintain health during this, however, proper foods must be eaten. Your body can begin to fall short in nutrients, causing health issues, if you do not eat a balanced diet.


It is not uncommon to find individuals that prefer to stay away from animal products. This is often due to a moral concern over the killing of animals. Humans are natural omnivores, meaning we do well with a steady supply of meat and plant matter. When you change the diet to include only plant life, there must be foods included that boost protein levels. There are some benefits to this lifestyle, however. Some cancers are less common in those that eat vegetarian. Your body must work hard to break down meat from animals. Long-term vegetarians enjoy less risk of gallstones and kidney stones. Heart disease is also linked to fatty meat products. Vegetarians also have lower blood pressure than meat eaters. It is recommended to work with a nutritionist when making the transition so that no nutritional deficiencies occur. This is especially important for those that have a tendency towards becoming anemic.

Everyone has to pick the eating style that is best for them. Many dietary choices revolve around weight goals. Fats are removed from the diet to lose, while heavy doses of protein are often added when gaining is desired. Moral obligations may be a part of a vegetarian lifestyle. The health benefits of leaving meat behind are excellent, however. The college years often bring out unhealthy snacking habits, leading to some serious health issues. These can become serious if the habits continue long-term. Thankfully most of us outgrow this stage. When nutrition is the main focus of eating, better health is sure to follow.
